FACIAL AESTHETICS

With the careful use of wrinkle relaxation injections and/or injectable fillers are used to soften expression lines and define facial contours.

Anti-wrinkle treatment is a simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

One 15-minute treatment, a few tiny injections and within days there’s a noticeable improvement in those persistent lines between the brows, which can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.

Anti-wrinkle treatment is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time. This treatment has been referred to as BTX, Wrinkle Smoothing Injections and Botulinum Toxin.

A million people have been treated with anti-wrinkle injections since FDA approval in 2002. Not just models and movie stars, but people from all types of professions.

Our facial aesthetics dentist, Claire Shaw visits St Mawes Dental monthly to provide facial aesthetics treatments.

How does it work?

Botox® block the chemical in the skin responsible for muscle contraction, thereby temporarily smoothing out wrinkles. At St Mawes Dental we use all brands of botulinum toxin including Botox® a naturally occurring protein from the bacteria clostridium botulinum.

We actively encourage patients to seek independent medical advice before having wrinkle relaxing injections. All of our wrinkle relaxing treatments are carried out by Dr Claire Shaw, our facial aethetics dentist, only after a thorough consultation process.

Where can it be injected?

Botulinum Toxin A can be injected on the face and body such as:

  • Forehead

  • Frown lines in between brows

  • Mouth

  • Nasal area (bunny lines)

  • Neck

  • Armpits (excessive sweating/hyperhydrosis)

Wrinkle softening is a straightforward procedure. We simply use a fine needle to inject painlessly into specific areas to smooth out those lines and wrinkles.

Although these injections have an excellent safety record, we shall of course discuss potential side effects during your initial consultation. It can also be used to eliminate gummy smiles and can help treat teeth clenching by injecting the Botox® into the masseter muscle to relax it.

Am I suitable for this treatment?

A full medical history is taken for anyone contemplating this treatment. You will be required to fill out a medical form to rule out any conditions that might contra indicate a treatment. The vast majority of healthy people, who are not pregnant or breastfeeding are suitable.

How long do the effects last?

Generally the effects last on average 4-6 months though this can depend on one individual to another depending on their metabolic rate, stress levels and if they are on certain medications.

What can I expect immediate after treatment?

Sometimes it is common to see small raised bumps at the injection sites but these should go down within 20-30 minutes. It is also quite common to experience a mild headache and in certain cases very mild flu like symptoms. These can be treated with over the counter painkillers.

When will I see results?

It normally takes about 10-14 days to see the full results of the treatment. Occasionally you may require a top up injections at your 2 week review appointment. The overall result is a fresher more relaxed face. With regards to the armpits, you notice within a couple of days.

How often can I have it done?

It’s recommended that you wait until your previous treatment has worn off before having more wrinkle relaxing treatment. This treatment can be combined with other treatments such as facial fillers to make your skin look even younger and fresher.

DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to bring a more youthful appearance by restoring volume or fullness to the face and lips. They work by reducing or eliminating lines, wrinkles and folds in the skin and the effects are seen immediately after treatment. As skin ages, both naturally and because of other factors such as sun damage, smoking, and poor diet, we lose collagen, fat and other natural moisturising substances from our skin. These can be thought of as the natural ‘scaffolding’ that keeps skin looking young and feeling firm. With less collagen, our skin becomes thinner and we start to see lines, wrinkles and folds developing. This is usually more noticeable on our faces.
