If your tooth has been damaged by decay and you have developed a cavity, a white filling is a subtle and functional way to strengthen and protect your natural tooth.

White fillings are a popular cosmetic alternative to metallic fillings as they are barely noticeable and blend in with the natural teeth.

These natural-appearing fillings are particularly effective where a natural tooth has been damaged due to trauma or decay. They are bonded directly onto a tooth’s enamel which means the dentist will only need to remove the affected part of the tooth.

Many of our patients choose white fillings over metal fillings as they are discrete and provide the same function as traditional metal fillings.

If you require a number of fillings, we might recommend seeing our hygienist to learn how to care for your teeth properly and for advice on how to prevent decay damaging your teeth over time.

We offer the most advanced, safe and effective dentist-approved whitening systems available in the UK and will provide guidance and advice so you can renew your smile in a matter of weeks.

Enlighten’s Evolution Teeth Whitening

The Enlighten Evolution Teeth Whitening system is thoroughly tried and tested and is an  effective way to whiten your teeth. Having completed treatment, patients have reported experiencing teeth which are up to ten shades brighter than their original colouring.

If you opt for this whitening system, you will need to attend the practice so our dentist can take impressions of your teeth. These are necessary so that your whitening trays can be created by our laboratory team. Over the next 14 nights, you will need to fill the trays with the special Evolution bleaching gel and wear them overnight. After this period, we will book you in for another appointment and carry out a final whitening treatment.

We will provide advice on how to maintain your newly whitened smile and have helped many patients achieve their desired look using this system.

In just ten days, the Pola home-whitening system can brighten heavily stained and discoloured teeth. This system is often recommended for people who have severe discolouration or dullness and is used for just 30 minutes a day. We will advise you on what whitening system is most appropriate for your teeth.

If Pola is the right treatment for you, we will take impressions of your teeth so that our expert laboratory team can create your custom-made mouth trays. Over the first ten days, you will need to fill the trays with the Pola whitening solution and wear them for the required amount of time.

You can contact us at any time during your whitening treatment for advice or guidance.

Braces are not just for teens, they are used by millions of Adults around the world. If you have put up with protruding or crooked teeth for most of your adult life, then why not consider orthodontic treatment to transform your smile and revive your self-confidence?

At St Mawes Dental we believe that your smile is one your most important features, and if you don’t feel happy smiling and laughing openly, we want to help. We offer a range of adult orthodontic treatments to correct crooked or misaligned teeth in a subtle and speedy way.

If you want straighter teeth but don’t want people to notice you’re having orthodontic treatment, then Invisalign is a subtle way to achieve your goals.

The transparent, removable aligners tackle issues such as crooked teeth, wide gaps, cross bites and underbites. Your dentist will advise if Invisalign is the right system for your orthodontic issues. If so, impressions will be taken of your teeth so that our laboratory can create your first set of aligners – which are similar to a mouth guard.

Once you start treatment you will need to wear your aligners every day but these can be removed for eating and cleaning. Every two weeks, you will visit us at St Mawes Dental for a new set of aligners. Each new set of aligners will be designed to help your teeth gently move into their new, straighter position.

At the end of your treatment, we will provide you with a retainer so that you can maintain the new position of your teeth.

St Mawes Dental works closely with registered specialists at the only specialist practice in Truro to provide our patients with all the options for adult orthodontics.

Dental implants are a permanent, strong and natural-looking replacement for missing teeth. Embedded into the jawbone, they are made of two parts: a titanium screw and a prosthetic tooth.

At St Mawes Dental we are experienced and skilled in the assessment and placement of dental implants to help restore patients’ appearance and functionality. We work closely with the only specialist practice in Truro where we work closely with an implant dentist who has used this treatment on a frequent basis with high levels of success.

Losing one or more teeth can have a severe impact on an individual’s self-confidence as well as their ability to eat, chew and speak normally. Dental implants are therefore the ideal solution for patients who are struggling with the loss of their teeth.

Once we have examined your mouth and jawbone thoroughly – using x-rays and occasionally CT scans – we will be able to ascertain whether you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. If you are, a titanium screw will be embedded into your jawbone. This is to act as the new ‘root’ for your prosthetic tooth or teeth. Once the site of the screw has healed (which can take a few months), the dentist will attach a false tooth or teeth to the screw.

Implants are durable and proven to last for a number of years.

Single Tooth Implant

If you have lost one tooth at the front or back of the mouth and would like the gap to be filled, a single tooth implant is a great solution.

Blending into the mouth and functioning as a normal tooth, many patients prefer implants to a bridgeas these have been found to last much longer and there’s no need for treatment on the surrounding teeth.

The prosthetic tooth will be colour-matched to your surrounding teeth and once attached to the screw, can last a lifetime if cared for properly.

Implant Retained Dentures

Dentures are often used when a patient has lost a number of teeth in a row or have lost all their upper or lower teeth.

Implant retained dentures are simply where a denture appliance is held in place by implants which are embedded into the jaw. This significantly reduces the chance of a denture slipping out of place or rubbing against the gums as it is held by clips attached to the implants.

If you opt for implant retained dentures, we will assess the suitability by taking x-rays or referring you for a CT scan to determine the viability of your jawbone.

A number of screws (or implants) will then be placed into the jawbone in order to act as a foundation for the dentures. While your mouth heals, we will provide you with temporary dentures but once ready, your new dentures will be fitted.

As with normal dentures which are held in place by adhesive, you can still remove your implant retained device for cleaning.

Dental crowns are placed on teeth which require extra support or may have been damaged. They are also used to support bridges.

Your dentist will use this restorative treatment to strengthen weakened teeth and will ensure your crown is fitted precisely for comfort and durability.

Also known as a ‘cap’, crowns are natural in feel and appearance. When placed at the back of the mouth. However, many patients prefer ceramic or porcelain crowns for a subtler finish, especially if they are being placed nearer the front of the mouth.

Crowns are used to preserve your natural tooth and may be used instead of a filling where a cavity is larger than usual. They can also be used to correct a misshapen or discoloured tooth.

If you require a crown, your dentist will need to prepare the natural tooth by removing or filing down the damaged part. The crown will then be created specifically for you in our laboratory before being fitted. While you wait for your permanent crown, the dentist may place a temporary crown so you feel comfortable in the interim.

A bridge is used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. It is a strong and stable solution to fill gaps in your teeth, restoring function and appearance.

When you lose a tooth, it can cause discomfort, problems when eating and might affect your confidence. We offer a number of solutions to replace missing teeth with natural-looking, resilient prosthetic alternatives.

If you require a traditional dental bridge, crowns will be placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap. The prosthetic or false tooth will then be placed into the gap and will be supported by the crowns. Once these restorations are fitted into the mouth, they will be fixed with a special adhesive for a permanent result.

Other types of bridges include:
  • A cantilever bridge, which is held in place by one natural tooth instead of two.

  • A resin-bonded bridge which is bonded to the supporting teeth via a metal framework.

Bridges can be made of metal or porcelain and will be created specifically for you in our laboratory.

Benefits of Bridges

Your dentist will give you all the advice and information needed prior to the fitting of a bridge. There are a number of benefits to a dental bridge, including:

  • Replaces a missing tooth to enhance function and appearance

  • Long lasting and durable

  • Natural appearance and feel

  • Subtle and unnoticeable

Straight, sparkling white teeth are within your reach with dental veneers that are crafted especially for you to enhance your smile and boost your confidence.

Applied directly to your front teeth, dental veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry solutions at St Mawes Dental.

Patients leave our practice with a shining set of straighter, brighter teeth as an alternative to orthodontic treatment. Made from porcelain or composite materials, the aim of a veneer is to look and feel as natural as possible. Your dentist will help you choose the shade that suits you the best.

Once your veneers have been fixed in place, it is important to take care of them so that they last as long as possible. Ask your dentist for advice about the best way to care for your veneers.

We offer helpful finance plans so you can enjoy your new smile with a payment plan that is convenient for you.
