Dentistry Done Differently

The Temporomandibular joint is the joint that allows your jaw to open and close.

When the jaw opens, there is a hinge movement to drop the jaw but also a sliding movement to bring it slightly forward. Muscles attached between the jaw and the skull contract and relax to move the jaw.

Discomfort in the jaw is a common problem, and there are many possible causes. The most common symptoms experienced with TMJ dysfunction include pain and clicking in the jaw, earache, discomfort in the face, headaches and difficulty with biting and chewing. The causes of these symptoms may be divided into two broad groups: problems with the function of the muscles and problems within the joint. Sometimes, the muscles working the jaw become overactive, a condition called para-function. It is not known exactly why this occurs, but there are many effective treatments available. Other problems with the TMJ include increased sensitivity to pain, inflammation, arthritis and injury.

Rest, painkillers, exercises, orthodontics, or a splint to prevent you from grinding your teeth at night are all common treatments.

At St Mawes Dental, we will discuss your symptoms in detail with you, together with your treatment options. The treatment your dentist recommends will depend on your symptoms and what is found when your teeth and jaw are examined.

Reducing our impact on the environment

At St Mawes Dental, we believe we can work together to preserve the resources of the planet, use products and materials which respect the environment and contribute to environmental protection above and beyond our operation.

TOXIN REDUCTION

We aim to be an ‘amalgam-free’ practice and are committed to lower the environmental impact from the use of industrial mercury, which is a constituent of dental amalgam fillings.

SAFE USE & DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS

We have special equipment such as safe filters in our suction and waste pipes to minimise our patient’s exposure to mercury when old dental metal fillings have to be taken out.

ENERGY CONSERVATION

In every area of our practice we have embraced the latest technology and installed the latest heating, insulation and energy recycling processes to significantly lower the energy consumption of the practice.
